August's Newsletter

August is a time of regeneration here at the School of Movement Medicine. After a full and vibrant year, we take a long exhale, reflecting with gratitude on all we have shared and looking ahead to the seasons to come.

This year has given us much to celebrate, especially the extraordinary Summer Long Dance. It was a deeply moving week of connection, generosity and community, with many participants describing it as the best Long Dance yet.

We are proud that the 17 Long Dances up 'til now have together raised over £1 Million for a whole host of great projects around the world. And all to the beat of fantastic music! Fund raising is woven into the Long Dance ceremony because in the original vision for the Long Dance, we were told: 'genuine ceremony should have positive impact not just on the people able to attend and their loved ones, but wider afield in the web of life.'

Together, as a community, we raised more than £75,000 for charitable causes, including over £25,000 for Fundación Pachamama. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the generosity, commitment and shared vision of everyone who took part. Thank you for helping to create such a meaningful impact, not only within our own community but also for the people and organisations we are honoured to support.

We offer our congratulations and gratitude to all those Long Dancers and all your sponsors.

As we move through August, we hope you too are able to find moments to rest, reflect and reconnect with what matters most. We are already looking forward to welcoming you to one of our events in the months ahead as we continue this journey together.

a poem from one of our elders written at the long dance

Death is sometimes a choice
for Carolyn

Death is sometimes a choice, just as life is.
Peace can be a choice, just as strife is.
One is not better, necessarily,
than the other, though momentarily
either darkness or light may entrnance us
when we allow its energy to dance us,
even against our will. To life, or death,
we will devote ourselves, and with each breath
shape the path we take during our time
on earth, rehearse the rhythm and the rhyme
we make our own. We may think it good or bad.
The music may bring joy, or leave us sad,
bewildered. But it is simply a choice
like whether I choose to speak, or mute my voice.
