My name is Sally and I am an American, living for 20 years in Finland with my family of boys and a cat. Our home is in the seaside town of Loviisa. I am the first Movement Medicine teacher in Finland and with my small group of dancers, it feels like we are pioneers on a wonderful journey together.
2Are you a Movement Medicine teacher and/or facilitator? When did you train and graduate?
I am a teacher. I completed my Professional Training in 2021 and I hope to graduate in 2026.
3Who do you serve with your Movement Medicine work?
I offer myself in service to anyone who feels drawn to come into a closer relationship with their bodies and hearts. The dancers who dance with me are brave enough to try something new to this area of Finland, and to be led in English, their second language. They are young and old; some are shy and have never done this type of movement and others have some previous experience.
4What is the meaning of this work for you?
Movement Medicine is a practice where dancers can befriend their body/ heart/ mind through deep listening and curiosity in order to build inner trust and connection. I create a safe space for dancers to come home to their body and heart. I weave in our interconnection to our loved ones, the elements, and the larger web of life, which kindles a sense of belonging in ourselves wherever we are.
5Please tell us about two recent precious moments you’ve experienced in your professional Movement Medicine work.
After dancing the Elements Practice, a dancer shared that she saw us all dancing together around a big bonfire in the forest. It was the first time someone spoke of the spiritual and celebration!
In the sharing circle after completing the Chambers of the Heart, the dancers began to thank each other. This was a wonderful "aha" moment that the group was growing together and feeling each other alongside.
6Please tell us something about when you recognised that Movement Medicine was going to play an important role in your life.
I had been trying to decide if I would start on the 5Rhythms teaching path since I had danced this in the US, but someone suggested I try Movement Medicine. So I went to my first MM workshop led by Susannah in Munich. When I walked into the dance space and saw the four directional altar banners and heard the care for the earth woven through the practice, I immediately felt in my bones that I had found my home.
7The thing you find yourself saying most often to your participants
Be curious about how the elements dance in your body and, through that, feel your elemental connection to all life - your belonging to life. Now sense into your heart. Breathe into your heart. How does it want to move in your body in this moment? Let that arise in your dance.
8If you had 9 words to say anything you wanted to the world, what would it be?
Let our love shine out into the world!
